Reseeding Grass

There are many reasons for reseeding grass in your lawn. Your grass may have brown or bare spots, it may simply be thin at some areas, or weeds may have taken over a portion of your lawn. Whatever the reason, all homeowners at some point will face the task of reseeding  the grass in sections of their lawn. It's possible to cover the area with sod as well, but if cost is a factor, reseeding is a fraction of the cost of sod and is so easy that anyone can do it.

When Is The Best Time For Reseeding Grass?

Reseeding grass can basically be done at any time, but early Fall is the best time for reseeding grass with Spring as the second choice. The reason is that you need to give the grass time to become established before leaving it to nature's mercy. Summer is too hot, unless you're practically watering it all day. Winter of course is too cold. After the hottest days of the summer have passed and before the harshness of winter begins, is the perfect time for new grass seedlings to become acquainted in their new home. The grass will have time to grow during the perfect cool temperatures of the fall. And after a nice sleep over the winter months, they're healthy and raring to go come spring time.

What Type of Reseeding Grass Should I Use?

There is no best type of reseeding grass that is appropriate for all areas. Determining factors are the location of your lawn, how much sun it gets, how much rain the area gets, and so on. For example, a good grass for shaded lawns is fescue. A good grass for a lawn that has direct sunlight on it for much of the day is bermuda grass. Your soil type in your lawn can also impact your choice. The best way to choose reseeding grass is to go to your local lawn care center and ask them what they recommend for the area. If they have been in the neighborhood for more than a couple of years they are experts on the soil and environmental conditions in your area and will guide you to making the right choice.

How To Reseed

After clearing the area to be re-seeded of weeds and loosening the soil, lay the seeds evenly over the area. Don't overcrowd them but don't skimp on them either. Cover them with a light layer of soil, partly to protect them from birds who may feed on them and partly to prevent the wind from blowing them away. Water the area immediately and continue to water them twice a day until the seeds begin to sprout. At this time you can cut back on your watering and let nature take its course.
