Cottonseed meal - A Great Nutrient for Your Lawn

Cottonseed, a natural farming product at one time mostly discarded by farmers, is now changed into food for people and livestock. But most gardeners probably don’t know that cottonseed meal and cottonseed hulls make excellent fertilizer and mulch for vegetable plants. This product is so rich that it can safely be applied to both gardens and lawns to help plants grow.

Cottonseed meal is created from crushed cotton seeds. It is also slow releasing, so it won’t burn your lawn. Cottonseed meal typically contains 6 to 7 percent nitrogen, less than 2 percent phosphorus, and about 1 percent potassium. Place this over your lawn and it will gradually decompose, slowly expelling its nutrients into the soil

To apply to your lawn, follow the directions on the bag. But you’ll typically use three to four pounds of cottonseed meal for every 100 square feet of lawn area.

How much will you pay?If your local lawn and garden center sells it, you can expect to pay less than ten dollars for a four pound bag. If you can’t find it locally, you will more than likely be able to locate this great nutrient from any number of places online.
